Southeast Asia Emerges as a Key Market for Payment Integration

Southeast Asia is an important testing ground for the next stage of Asian payment connectivity. Its diverse consumer markets, strong mobile adoption, and growing regional trade create demand for payment systems that can operate across different countries and currencies.

An International Monetary Fund study published in 2026 highlights the speed of this transformation. In Thailand, the average number of PromptPay fast-payment transactions rose more than eightfold between 2019 and 2024, reaching nearly 350 transactions per person annually. In the Philippines, QR-payment transaction volume increased by 467% in 2024 compared with 2023.

These figures demonstrate the growing importance of digital payment infrastructure in everyday commerce.

Cross-border QR payments are also gaining momentum. Rather than relying exclusively on cash exchange or conventional card payments, consumers in participating markets can increasingly use familiar domestic payment applications when travelling abroad.

For merchants, this can offer additional ways to serve international customers. For distributors and retail technology providers, it creates demand for compatible payment terminals, integrated point-of-sale systems, and solutions that support multiple payment methods.

Nevertheless, Asia is not a single, uniform payment market. Consumer preferences, banking infrastructure, acceptance networks, and regulatory requirements vary significantly from country to country. Businesses entering the region therefore need market-specific payment strategies rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Industry players targeting Southeast Asia’s payment market may attend 2027 ASIA SHOP · Retail Payment Technology Exhibition, held March 4‑6, 2027 at the China Import & Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. With its ASEAN Buyer Matchmaking Zone, the exhibition connects enterprises with regional buyers to address cross‑border payment localisation and compliance challenges.
