From Mobile Payments to Cross-Border Connectivity

Asia’s payment landscape is entering a new phase of development. What began as a shift from cash to mobile wallets is evolving into a broader transformation involving cross-border transactions, interoperable QR codes, instant bank transfers, and integrated retail payment systems.

China has played a significant role in this transition. Mobile payment platforms such as Alipay and WeChat Pay have become deeply embedded in everyday commerce, allowing consumers to pay for everything from groceries and restaurant meals to transportation and online shopping. The experience has also helped shape consumer expectations for fast, convenient, and secure transactions.

According to Statista’s September 2026 overview of digital payments in Asia-Pacific, digital wallets accounted for approximately 77% of regional e-commerce transaction value in 2025. This highlights the importance of wallet-based payments in the region’s online retail economy.

Meanwhile, payment infrastructure across Southeast Asia is developing rapidly. National systems such as Thailand’s PromptPay, Malaysia’s DuitNow, and Indonesia’s QRIS are expanding the use of real-time transfers and QR-based payments. As these systems become more connected, the opportunities for cross-border commerce are growing.

For businesses operating across Asian markets, payments are no longer simply a checkout function. They are becoming an essential part of the customer experience and international market strategy.
